Excavation, also referred to as undercutting, is a process in which unstable elements are removed from underground at the beginning of a paving project. It is a more extensive procedure than grading, and is usually only implemented when issues surface during normal ground stabilization.
There are a few different ways to determine whether the ground needs excavating. Aside from geological analysis, we can perform a test known as a Proof Roll. During a Proof Roll test, a heavy vehicle is driven over the area. Afterward, the ground is examined to find any spots where ruts have formed, which indicates that the ground is still unstable. If there is a heavy amount of rutting, then excavation should follow to remove any unstable material and stabilize the ground. |
